Functional Capacity Assessment

What is a functional capacity assessment (FCA)?

A functional capacity assessment is a detailed assessment where the clinician assesses the person using informal and formal assessment techniques to write a very detailed reporting on how the person engages and manages their daily life.

Assessment techniques

You will engage in direct sessions which are customised to assess skills relating to:

  • Motor skills (gross, fine and eye motor) and how these impact upon your ability to engage in daily life.

  • Social and Emotional skills and how these impact upon your ability to engage in daily life.

  • Cognition skills and how

  • Communication

  • Self care (Activities of daily living)

  • Self management (Instrumental Activities of daily living)

As well as formal standarised assessments to compare engagement in daily life against standard expectations.

The family and/or support network of the person are also asked lots of questions to understand the support they provide and the impact on their caregiving and occupational performance (how they live).

Recommendations

The clinician through understanding the everyday life of the person formulates recommendations which evidence the reasonable and necessary guidelines by the National Disability Insurance Scheme to access funding.
